The second part of the title is, “what to do and say when it matters most!” Many newly lay counselor, pastors, etc. many not have any ideal on what to do or say in certain situations. Wright, by chapter gives a firsthand account using Biblical Principles, scriptures, examples, figures and crisis situations. The application Wright uses in “The Guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling consists of twelve chapters, whereas each chapter deals with all walks of life that is in crisis due to a loss or abuse which cost a crisis and trauma. Each chapter gives detailed information on dealing with different types of crisis situation. One of the greatest aspects about “the Complete Guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling is it provides applications how to counsel and when you no longer can help a person in crisis, but when expertise counseling is need. For instance, starting with chapter one, counseling from a Biblical perspective, Wright uses Jesus as an exemplary model by examining the characteristics of Jesus’ approach in counseling. The relationship Jesus had with the people to whom He ministered were the foundation of His approach. In chapter two, Application of Biblical Principles, Wright’s aim is to teach the counselor principles of becoming a good counselor by listening, hearing, when to and not to speak. Wright says, “As you counsel people in crisis, remember that to help them become more self-sufficient, you need to wean through gradually Running header: The Complete Guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling 3 from your insights, help and counseling. Your task is to work yourself out of a job and to rejoice with the person when that occurs.” (Wright 2011, p. 42) Chapter three is part two of Application of Biblical Principles, which discusses Empathy. Wright says empathy is “one of the most important commodities for effective counseling.” (Wright p. 43) He gives example of empathetic situation, responses which counselor can use during certain situations to assist in your counseling process. Chapter four goes a little deeper into the counseling process. This chapter is about helping other recover from their losses in life (part one). Wright explains loss as “A simple four letter word that is one of everyone’s companions throughout life.” (Wright p. 61) He goes on to discuss what are some different types of loss? Wright identifies fifteen types of losses. One statement he makes about loss is, “Whenever a loss occurs, it’s important to see it in the context of experience so that there’s an understanding of the full impact of what has happened.” (Wright p. 78) Part two of the chapters, Wright write about the different process of grief its purpose along with Biblical insights for understanding Grief. In dealing with the grieving process, Wright in chapter six provide practical steps on helping a grieving person recover and say goodbye. Chapter seven, Wright talks about what is crises?, the cause and coping with crisis. In Chapter eight and nine, what are the phases of a Crisis, the impact phase and the normal crisis patterns and the process of crisis intervention? Wrights says, “If you are going to have an effect upon the life of a person or family, it will be at the time of a crisis.” (Wright p. 163) In chapter ten and eleven, Wright gives biblical scripture about traumatic events in the Bible. This chapter is when time doesn’t heal all wounds and in chapter eleven how a trauma victim can be helped. In chapter twelve, Wright explains about Crisis of Death, the types of death, how people respond Running header: The Complete Guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling 4 and overcome death. Chapter thirteen is the types of death one will encounter, such as child, spouse, etc. In Chapter fourteen and fifteen deal with suicide and case notes. In the final few chapters, sixteen, seventeen and eighteen talks about ministering to children in the time of crisis or trauma, Children’s Crises and a Guideline to help Children in Grief. Concrete responses One statement of many that stuck out in my mine in Dr. Wright’s book is found in chapter one. Jesus encouraged people to accept responsibility. “In John 5, Jesus responded to the man at the pool of Bethesda by asking, “Do you want to get well”? (v6). By asking this question, Jesus sought to have the man accept responsibility for remaining sick or being made well.” (Wright p. 20) Accepting responsibility as Wright states it, “In crisis counseling, the person, couple or family must see that they need to make a choice to remain the same or to change and grow; and they must make that choice before much progress will be seen. A goal of crisis counseling, as you will see, is to help the person in need accept and take responsibility.” Taking responsibility reminds me of a counseling session I was involved in. This young lady age 21 always claimed she had a bad life growing-up, and her parents just were not the parents they should have been. On the other hand, her sister says they were the best parents ever. The two girls just 2 years apart in age (the older 24 and the younger 21) had a difference in opinion in growing –up. Farther into the counseling session with the younger, all problems she encounters in her life were a direct result from the strictness of her parents. Not allowing her to go out with friends to the movies, parties, etc. The younger feels if she was allowed to she would have made better decisions not. Keep in mind, both parents was present, they were taught Godly principles. Running header: The Complete Guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling 5 I began to remind her of she have to have a renewed mind and a spirit of forgiveness. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Roman 12:2). If you still have the same mind set and an unforgiving spirit, you would not be able to accept responsibility for your action. We have a choice in what we do. “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32). She still struggling sometime accepting and forgiving people from her past. I believe this is something that does not occur over night or all at one time. As you may know, when a person is not able to take responsibilities for their action, other issues also are detected. There are issues such as rejection. Reflection Where do I not agree/strongly agree with the author?” In Dr. Wrights book “The complete guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling,” he puts a great deal of information into this book, a lot of research in using scriptures and other counseling materials. We find that he implements the word of God to demonstrate there is power in the scriptures and by using scriptures; this can become the solution to most of your problems. Dr. Wright’s presentation of his material starting from chapter one through twenty is very organized and a very easy to read book, which allows the reader to receive a better understanding on counseling and its techniques. “The complete guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling,” again in each chapter, a foundation is laid with concepts to get from point “A” to point “B” using subtopics and counseling reference for counseling. The Arthur Dr. Wright, throughout each chapter places important information in bold writing. For example in chapter one, “A goal of crisis counseling is to help the person in need Running header: The Complete Guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling 6 accept and take responsibility.” (Wright p. 21) Another statement which stands is found in chapter eight, “The Phases of a Crisis,” “One of the most helpful ministries you can ever engage in at this time is to help normalize what the person is experiencing.” As I read Dr. Wright’s book, I found numerous strengths in his book. I do not see where I do not agree with anything Dr. Wright has written. As I stated before, Dr. H. Norman Wright’s book, “The Complete Guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling” is a book that need to be in every library of a pastor, layperson and counselor. The Holy Spirit has direct access to the inner thoughts and feelings of and through me. Wright concludes with Scriptures and Prayer. He makes the statement, “It is vital that you be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit concerning when to bring in Scripture and which Scripture to discuss.” (Wright, p. 415) In every situation, I will seek the face of the Lord regarding my words that I say, how it will be said and when to say. That also will include scriptures that I will use. There are times when we are not really prepared mental or spiritual. Running header: The Complete Guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling 7 Wright also has a section which offers a number of prayers for just about everything that a person may go through during a crisis. During the counseling session, their patterns of prayer will be discussed. A determination will be made on which prayer will be given to the counselee.
