(Solved): Symbol analysis of THE YELLOW WALLPAPER by Charlotte Gilman
Your final essay is a 3-5 page (1000-1500 word) Symbol Analysis. In this essay you will want to analyze how symbols reflect or embody theme in the story. Symbols can be verbal (such as in the use of names or titles) or physical (as in images, objects, characters) as they represent ideas specifically in the text. For this reason, you will want to examine passages to illustrate how symbols affect or are related to plot, conflict, characterization, epiphany, tone, irony, imagery, setting and/or dialogue. Remember that your discussion of symbols should be a means of discussing a particular thematic idea in the context of the story; they should be a catalyst for analyzing the story’s disparate literary parts. Cite from the story and from at least one scholarly source (use the databases to find essays either about the story or about the author’s approach to fiction in general). You may write your essay on any of the stories assigned, including those your group presentated. FORMAT: Your essay should contain the following: HEADING AND TITLE, as given in the course syllabus MLA style. (Staple/clipped before you come to class.) AN INTRODUCTION that includes a literal summary, interest-creating discussion, and a well thought-out and articulated thesis statement to state something arguable and significant. Remember, your thesis should articulate how you think symbols contribute to thematic meaning in the story, as well as state which elements you will analyze. Be wary of “cute” introductions; remember this is a formal essay. You would do well to address the theme quickly. BODY PARAGRAPHS that adhere to the structure and development we have discussed in class (i.e. topic sentence, idea, evidence, levels of explanation). I will pay particular attention to paragraph organization. Expect to write in an expositional fashion. That is, cite the text in order to confirm and explain your assertions. Be sure to review the handout “Elements of Critical Writing.” A CONCLUSION that gives closure to your essay without merely summarizing the body. Develop significance in relation to your thesis. WORKS CITED page formatted in accordance with MLA documentation style. AUDIENCE: You should assume that your reader has a background in the terms used in literary analysis, and has read the story you are analyzing. NOTE: Organize your essay! Do not simply comment your way through the story. Review the handout “Elements of Critical Writing” and “Paragraph Development” to model your thesis statement, and review organization, citation, and paragraph development. I will expect you to have mastered these concepts! Revise carefully and well.
