What are one or more important sociological issues related to sexuality in the world today that you observed in the Series you explored? What are some data you can find to show the prevalence of these issues, and what groups of people do these issues affect most? Sorry for the late post work has been extremely hectic. This week I focused on exploring inmates in the “Series”. The story that had the most important sociological issue to me was a lady from West Indian culture who was sexually abused at as a child by multiple family members. Needless to say, her childhood innocent was taken from her. Due to her cultural it was hard for her to express her sexual abuse she was dealing with. Then she experienced sexual abuse again in 9th grade by a classmate feeling on her breast. This causing her to spiral out of control out of fear. She was later suspended from school and never returned. Never seeking help from a trusted adult, she began to hear voices in her head. She eventually became a rebel of the streets just trying to survive she would steal benefit checks out of the mailbox. One day she wasn’t as devious getting away with a benefit check from her neighbor, she came looking for her check. The voices in her head told her she was in danger and to defend herself. The lady killed the neighbor and the 10-year-old daughter. The police questioned her and let her go. Eventually the lady had horror nightmares that caused her to turn herself in admitting she committed a murder. The group that sexual abuse affects most is children. 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse; Self-report studies show that 20% of adult females and 5-10% of adult males recall a childhood sexual assault or sexual abuse incident; During a one-year period in the U.S., 16% of youth ages 14 to 17 had been sexually victimized; Over the course of their lifetime, 28% of U.S. youth ages 14 to 17 had been sexually victimized; Children are most vulnerable to CSA between the ages of 7 and 13. Charity Student 2 JordanA sociological issue in health and medicine is pediatric cancer. Before this class, I considered cancer as a personal problem, but now I see it more as sociological issue because of the impact it has on the child population. In 2017, it is estimated that 15,270 children ages 0-19 will be diagnosed with cancer and that 1, 790 of children will die of cancer in the United States. Furthermore, pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death in children past infancy; however, Cancer occurs more frequently among adolescents and young adults ages 15-39than in young children. What is more worrisome is that the cause of cancer is still unknown. Only 5% of cancers diagnosed in children are from inherited genetic mutations. (Cancer 2017). While reading the pediatric cancer series, I came across a story regarding the nurses’ role. The nurse states, “The MD’s build the treatment plan. The nurse’s job is to get it done,” (Big 2016). This statement relates to the Functionalism Approach described in our text. This perspective emphasizes that good health and effective medical care are essential for a society’s ability to function. Furthermore, under this approach, the physician-patient relationship is hierarchical: the physician provides instructions, and the patient needs to follow them. The physician diagnoses the person’s illness, decides how to treat it, and helps the person become well (Social 2016). I consider the nurse’s role in the same category as the physician’s. While the physician does instruct the patient how to treat their diagnosis, the nurse is there to help the patient follow those instructions. The nurse in the story states, “a lot of the time these kids won’t listen to the doctor. But they’ll listen to the nurse,” (Big 2016).
