There are short-term and long-term health effects of air pollution. Short-term effects are temporary. There are several short term effects. One of the short term effects is irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. A combination of smoke and fog, smog, can cause these irritations. Ozone one of the main substances that can cause coughing, wheezing, and dry throat (Friis, 2019). Nitrogen dioxide inflames the lungs and throat. Sulfur dioxide contracts the airways, thereby leading to wheezing, shortness of breath, and tightening in the chest. Sulfur dioxide in high concentrations causes burning in the nose. Lower respiratory conditions such as bronchitis and pneumonia can be aggravated through exposure to air pollution (Ghorani-Azam et al., 2016).
