Compared to adults, children drink more water, breathe more air and eat more food per pound of body weight and therefore increase their chances of exposure (CDC, 2020). Toddlers are more likely to put dirt in their mouths. For example, a toddler playing in a highly contaminated lead dirt can get sick from lead poisoning if they ingest the dirt. A child?s body may not be able to completely breakdown the components of toxins that enter their body. Since children are still growing and health issues from environmental toxins take years to develop, children hence have more time to develop health conditions than adults who are exposed later in their lives.nnChildren are not the only vulnerable population that are susceptible to environmental toxins.
