Mass media outlets range from print to electronic forms, including televisions, radios, newspapers and the internet. They are used to inform people of current happenings around them. It is correct to agree that these platforms actively shape people’s ideas.
All people depend on media communication for information and updates on each sector of society. Individuals will trust what they see and hear, and mass media are what they encounter every day (Hanson, 2018). Somehow, they rely on these outlets to learn about what is happening around them since all news being reported has to go through extreme examination and a rigorous editing process. Therefore, as the observer and reporter of the truth, mass media has earned people’s trust and, as a result, shaped the way people perceive all day-to-day matters. That shows the vital role played by media to influence decisions in society.
The influence turns to be negative sometimes, mainly because of unreliable information from media outlets. Media houses publish material to attract a larger crowd. Biased or false news may be passed to attain that goal. The omission of essential parts by media editors also occurs. On the other hand, the population does not validate how authentic communication is (Grazian, 2017). For instance, the ubiquitous presence of bad news has created a moody and gloomy atmosphere amongst readers, some of whom are left with a pessimistic outlook on the world. Misuse of the internet by people with bad intentions also leads to misinformation. Using that information leads to bad decision making or even ignite warfare to an extreme extent. Thus, it can also shape people’s ideas negatively and cause significant damage.
People depend on these platforms to make crucial decisions in society. The information sometimes is unreliable, which attracts wrong choices. Mass media influence is, however, apparent in shaping people’s ideas.
