How have primary school children with ASD and their families experienced the Covid 19 pandemic
In the pandemic, vulnerable populations like patients with challenges in mental conditions may be influenced at some point. There is less known about the parents and what they go through while at home with their children. Some situations of kids may call for proper attention hence the need to have a clear understanding of everyone and the surrounding. School setup may not have the room to study the autistic children, thus the need to research different areas like home, hospitals, and at times while the pupils are comfortable with the guardians. The research had to involve mixed methods to bring out a clear picture of all that would be applicable in different setups. Besides, the study may include strenuous means requiring the parents’ attention to get the right results. The applied methods included the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data about the learners at the selected schools. The qualitative data had the level at which parents are affected by the pandemic and may risk undergoing depression that comes from the burden. Besides, the qualitative data involved the number of autistic children is across different schools in America and the number of families affected by the condition.
The study had to rely on the electronic investigation. Anonymous questionnaires were assigned at different online platforms. The platforms investigated the condition of children living with ASD and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the commencement of the survey, the researchers were organized to demonstrate and modify the scientific nature, applicability, and rationality of the plan needed for the survey’s success. The questionnaire quality had to be controlled by setting the main questions as required for the answer, restriction, logical jump, and meeting the scope of the research. The questionnaire had to be sent to the respondents through an online platform that would allow parents to give their responses. The parents had to play an integral role in ensuring the privacy of every child captured in the survey.
Content of the Research
The research had to include four parts: preliminary information of the child; ASD information daily and outdoor events together with rehabilitation training in the time of the pandemic; Frequency of ASD children and abnormal behaviors; and stress that is affected by emotional status in parents and children at the same time (Makin, Hill, and Pellicano, 2017). The information in the first part had to involve the children with ASD, families, and parents. The position had to capture children’s age, grade, gender, province, residence, and some siblings in a family. Besides, the part had to catch the ranks in children, family economic status, parents’ educational level, and the changes involved in the per capita income.
Part two of the research had to capture the child’s daily sleep and other outdoor activities and their time with peers per day (Makin, Hill, and Pellicano, 2017). Besides, the study had to look into the parent’s state of health and economic stability during the pandemic. The research had to incorporate the Sigmoid behavioral theory, which was only applicable to the parents. The level of communication between the children and parents had to be taken into account to have what it takes to get the right results in the research and make sound conclusions (Roberts, Hunter, and Cheng, 2017 p3). The changes in children’s psychological behavior and the current rehabilitation situation had to be one serious aspect that maintains the research methodology. The third part of the research with ASD children had to be the frequency in their abnormal behavior, including listlessness, feelings for depression, nail gnawing, losing temper, easy distraction, excess worry, constant cry, and sense of discomfort when with the fellows.
The final part of the research had to capture parents’ emotional distress and their level of communication with ASD children. The study had to use Self-Rating Anxiety to assess parents’ level of anxiety. The covered questionnaires had to cover the environmental changes every learner may have gone through and may encounter difficulties as they are in the process of learning. The research had to look into depth at how parents are affected by their socio-economic level during the pandemic. Communication and attention may have changed among the parents, making it hard to retain and maintain the responses to the children. The families under research had to confirm the situation of their children as per the contents in the questionnaire.
Samples and Access of the Research and Target Population
The samples under target in the research included school-going children that are affected by the Autistic condition. The adverse situations of Autism were the main target in the fundamental analysis. Maintaining the research consistency and needs had to be covered in the entire process. The target had to ensure a need to contain the differences between economically stable parents and those struggling to make ends meet. The accessibility of samples had to be on learners and teachers and any other areas that research could be made simple.
In this situation, the research happens in a school setup; hence, they remain areas of accessibility. Teachers had to be involved while conducting their online research classes to access the information about learners and parents. Some parents appeared to be uncomfortable; hence identifying their situation would be easy. Following up on the parents and their kids had to make up the research since the parents played an integral role in the lives of the kids hence the need to have a stable state of understanding the condition. Communication made accessibility easy hence the demand to have complete research. Accessing the learners’ information remained one main challenge since some parents would not be ready to comply with the experts. The research process appeared not to belong and was stable to allow any parent to have the required time to deliver their responses.
The pandemic never went down well worth parents and made them have the needed peace with their Autistic children at home. Some Autistic children may respond best to routine, familiarity, and structure (Mutluer, Doenyas, and Genc, 2020). The moment schools open, there will be a possibility of starting online classes that will support the learners and give them a sense of understanding and reasoning in the process. Adapting to the changes made during quarantine may not have had that significant impact on the lives of the learners and parents. Children with Autism may have gone through emotional distress, social isolation, and frequent meltdown in the time of the pandemic.
It is open that the learners with Autism may be hard to educate since the learning had to be conducted online. The learning structure has to incorporate the needs of children living with disabilities (Mutluer, Doenyas, and Genc, 2020). Autistic learners will find it hard to adjust to the new norms and levels of communication since they will be in a different environment. The pandemic may have adversely affected the psychiatric research among children living with Autism (Tokatly Latzer, Leitner, and Karnieli-Miller, 2021 p.1049). Having a proper understanding of mental health effects among Autistic learners may be something hard to understand in the present research. The study had to report on changes in sleep time and quality among the children affected by Autism.
In the pandemic, there was no change in the quality and time of sleep among Autistic children. The sleep patterns among the children may have remained constant due to their stubborn nature (Musa, Dergaa, and Mansy, 2021 p.1862). The consistency in sleeping patterns had to cause problems among the children, including bedtime resistance and poor communication with parents. The rate of play and isolation remained constant since the learners may not have had what it takes to be with their peers due to their memory levels. Maintaining the state of learning among the children would not be as it was to be, which would be hard to understand the children. Parents may have what it takes to maintain the situation through continuous communication and interaction, but they still could not have what it takes to change the needs of every child they are taking care of. Stress-affected parents hence the challenge to be consistent when it comes to taking good care of them simultaneously. Besides, it would be hard to understand the nature of understanding among the learners and parents at home.
The potentiality of the risks of participation has to be in the account where the researcher has to be aware of any potential challenges the participants may encounter (Rivera et al. 2021 p.577). Besides, there is a need to understand the nature of events that happen in the research process, hence making it simple to access the necessary information that would positively impact future generations. The researcher has to be aware of the potential benefits of participation where they are informed of any possible outcome, which can be positive or negative (Sipes, Mullan, and Roberts, 2020 p.235). There is no need to dwell on the negative since it will significantly affect the parents; hence, the research will lack merit. The participants have to be assured of confidentiality and avoid the child and parent identity at the research time (Facca, et al., 2020). The participants have the right to withdraw from the research since the entire process is voluntary, and parents have to be consulted to be aware of collecting data related to them. Informed consent has to be in written form, where participants are informed of any event that may affect them in any way.
